THE RECORD
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SPOTSWOOD, N.J. - Authorities say the death of a man whose body was found inside a water tank at a central New Jersey industrial site appears to have been a suicide.

Spotswood police say David Tsappidi of Helmetta apparently had been inside the 40-foot tall tank for three days before being found Saturday.

The 41-year-old — an engineer and the married father of two young children — apparently was despondent because he had been out of work for several months. He was last seen on Aug. 31, and relatives reported him missing the next day.

Authorities searched the tank after a family friend noticed Tsappidi's car in the site's parking lot on Saturday. Crews found his body shortly after discovering that a 2-foot-square hatch near the top of the tank was open.
The line was a rare departure from a president who normally sticks close to the text of his speech and may forecast a more aggressive tone on the part of Obama as the midterms approach.

Probably no one in history has had the absurdly ecstatic media coverage of this douchebag. The press protected him way beyond the point of journalistic negligence. "Dominating the agenda for a very long time" my ass.

Regardless of what you think of Bush he was incredibly stoic in the face of constant, toxic criticism. He never complained or even acknowledged it as far as I'm aware. But poor widdle Barry's feelings are hurt.

Petraeus Condemns U.S. Church's Plan to Burn Qurans

By JULIAN E. BARNES And MATTHEW ROSENBERG

KABUL—The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.

Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

Hundreds of Afghans attended a demonstration in Kabul on Monday to protest the plans of Florida pastor Terry Jones, who has said he will burn the Quran on Sept. 11.

Military officials fear the protests are likely to spread beyond Kabul to other Afghan cities. In interviews with various media outlets, Mr. Jones has denied his protest will put troops in danger. Mr. Jones has been denied a permit for the demonstration but has said he plans to go forward with the his protest anyway.

Mr. Jones leads a tiny church of just 50 people, but his threat to burn the Muslim holy book has been condemned around the world and has garnered him international attention.

Gen. Petraeus declined to elaborate on precisely what kinds of threats or violence could occur in the wake of such a demonstration. But westerners in Afghanistan have been warned away from restaurants and other public places as tensions arise over the matter.

A report in Newsweek, later retracted, that a U.S. interrogator at the Guantanamo Bay prison had flushed a Quran down a toilet set off riots in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Muslim world.

* Muslims Protest Plans to Burn Quran

Officials fear that video of a members of Mr. Jones's church burning of Qurans could set off similar violence and stepped up attacks against U.S. troops.

Military leaders usually try to distance themselves from politics, so the decision by Gen. Petraeus to speak out to try and stop the burning is unusual. But last year Gen. Ray Odierno, the top commander in Iraq, asked President Barack Obama to stop the release of photos showing the abuse of Iraqi detainees, arguing pictures of Muslims being abused could touch off violence in Iraq and potentially slow down the withdrawal.

A burning bus after riots over the price of food in Maputo

A 30 per cent rise in the price of bread has caused widespread anger in one of the world’s poorest countries, but the government has said it is helpless in the face of soaring global wheat prices.

Drought and fires in Russia, which had been the world’s No. 3 wheat exporter, and a decision by the Russian government to extend a grain export ban until late 2011, have helped to boost benchmark US wheat prices by more than 25 per cent this year.

“Riots in Mozambique may just be a start as drought is expected to worsen in east Africa and dry heat reduces harvests in the U.S. and Russia,” investment bank Fairfax said in a research note.

On the opposite side of Africa, in Cameroon, the government is threatening to close down businesses found breaking price agreements on food staples after consumer groups warned that recent market price hikes could trigger unrest.

After initial calm in Mozambique’s capital Maputo, police said protesters began looting in the city’s outskirts.

Protests also broke out in the central town of Chimoio, 760 km (475 miles) north of Maputo, and at least six people were hurt after police opened fire on protesters, according to reports.

“Two of the wounded are in serious condition,” Teresa Inacio, a nurse at the Chimoio provincial hospital, told Lusa.

The number of deaths in the disturbances that broke out on Wednesday rose to 10 and the number of injuries to 443, according Mozambique’s Health Minister Ivo Garrido.

The dead included two children killed when police fired on protesters who blocked streets, set tyres alight and looted stores in the deadliest riots to hit the southern African country of 23 million since 2008.

Surprised there was no thread for the morning... or the week. Or if I missed it I apologize.

Tuned into the Box of Cocks segment and realized how much I miss the XM days with E-Lo.

Stalker Greg Downing appeared at Blackfriars Crown Court for sentening over hassessment and stalking Author Katharine Quarmby

A stalker was jailed today after writing a blog about ****** and murdering a woman he had been harassing in real life for two years.

Greg Downing detailed the imagined attack on children's author Katharine Quarmby in an online novel.

The 40-year-old bombarded Ms Quarmby, of north London, with phone calls and emails since they met through an online dating site in 2008, Blackfriars Crown Court, in London, heard.

He was convicted of stalking her on three separate occasions before she found the blog online after typing her name into the internet search engine Google.

The 29-page piece, titled A Novel: Katharine Quarmby, is about a man stalking the writer, burgling her home, ****** and finally murdering her.

Judge Deva Pillay sentenced Downing, of Beacon Road, Crowborough, East Sussex, to six months imprisonment.

He said: "This can only be described as a campaign of harassment.

"It is clear that your harassment of Miss Quarmby has been deliberate and premeditated so as to cause her and her family the maximum discomfort, embarrassment and fear."

Prosecutor Peter Gray said the pair met in 2008 using the online dating service on the Guardian website.

After seeing each other for four weeks, mother-of-two Ms Quarmby called off the relationship.

"Mr Downing seems to have wanted to continue contact and continue the relationship, much against the wishes of Ms Quarmby," said Mr Gray.

A short time later the writer, who was nominated for the Orange Prize for short story fiction for her book Fussy Freya in 2005, was forced to report Downing to the police after he plagued her with text messages, calls and emails.

In summer 2008, magistrates gave him a conditional discharge and placed a restraining order on him, preventing him from contacting Ms Quarmby or going to her address.

But the harassment continued with further telephone calls, the court heard.

Downing was hauled back before the courts and given another community order in January last year.

In January this year, he appeared in court again after getting in touch with Ms Quarmby and breaching his order.

Shortly after the court appearance, Ms Quarmby found the blog.

In a witness statement read out to the court, she said: "This seems like a fantasy or story which includes harassment, burglary of my home, **** and then finally murder.

"I am entirely worried about my personal safety and also my children's safety.

"I feel as though I am a prisoner in my own home, despite help from the police, I still feel at risk.

"The threats made were of a very serious nature."

Downing was sentenced today for "putting a person in fear of violence" after he pleaded guilty to the offence earlier this year.

Jessica Vega tries on her donated wedding gown in April at a Newburgh shop as a friend holds Vega's daughter, Ava. Strangers helped offer a dream wedding after Vega said she had terminal leukemia. Her husband, Michael O'Connell, now says Vega made up the story.

Michael O'Connell preferred to pretend there was only today and to forget that his wife's cancer would probably kill her in less than a year.

That's the way he used to think.

"I had to prepare for her to die," O'Connell said.
Now O'Connell says his wife, Jessica Vega, had pretended — saying she had terminal leukemia in order to scam him, everyone they knew and a long list of strangers who heard her story and wanted to help.

O'Connell and Vega were featured April 26 in a Times Herald-Record story about the many people who had come together to organize a dream wedding while the bride was still strong enough to walk down the aisle.

The story prompted dozens of others to help the 23-year-olds and their baby daughter in the week leading up to their May 2 wedding.

Strangers had donated everything from Vega's dress to wedding photos. For the couple's honeymoon, they flew on donated plane tickets to Aruba, where they stayed in a donated time share and spent donated money.

O'Connell said recently that it was all based on a lie. Vega's health hadn't gotten any worse, and he believed she never had a terminal illness.

O'Connell insisted a letter from Dr. Dan Costin that described her diagnosis was a fake.

When I was reporting the April 26 story, Vega showed me the letter to verify her diagnosis.

Now O'Connell had invited me to listen in when he called Costin's Westchester office and asked about Vega's medical records: "Never a patient here" was the response.

He hadn't wanted to look at Costin's letter before. And Vega had said in April that she kept it hidden to make life easier for him. O'Connell said he now wished he'd checked out the letter sooner.

In his mother's house in Walden, he switched on the speakerphone and dialed Costin's number.

A receptionist transferred O'Connell to an administrator who sounded exasperated to hear from him again.

"I can tell you for sure this person was never a patient here," the woman said, adding that they didn't want to keep receiving his calls. O'Connell hung up and pumped his fist.

"Yes! I did it!" he said. O'Connell has said he's glad to think Vega will live, but he is candidly bitter about being duped.

He hit redial on the phone so I could hear the greeting on Costin's automated calling system. I copied down the phone number and checked it against the one I had for Costin. The numbers matched.

Vega had been hard to reach. I called her for several days before overhearing the conversation with Costin's administrator. She hadn't responded to messages left on her cell phone, her father's phone or in her e-mail.

Her mother, Diana Vega, did answer a later call. "Jessie would never do something so manipulative," Diana Vega said and agreed to pass on a message to her daughter.

Vega calls husband abusive

Jessica Vega called the next day and said she had not lied about her diagnosis or the letter, although she now doubted their accuracy. She said she had a new doctor in the Bronx and was getting better away from O'Connell by eating fresh food, exercising and drinking nothing but water and tea.

She promised to let me tag along on her next doctor's visit when she was due to have a white-blood-cell count taken.

Vega was unhealthy living with O'Connell and left because he was physically abusive, she said. "I don't think he really wants to go down that route of me exposing him," she said.

O'Connell had previously said he'd bitten Vega on the elbow once when they were living in Yonkers.

He said he was trying to escape her headlock at the time, but it still led to his arrest and a temporary restraining order against him.

He said he also slapped her during a fight at their Montgomery apartment before they separated. He claimed Vega had torn up his car and punched him in the face that day because he was kicking her out.

"I slapped the fire out of her," O'Connell said. "Enough is enough."

No trip to the doctor

After the conversation with Costin's administrator, I called Vega, told her what I'd heard and asked her again if the letter was real.

"I really did receive it," she said; it came in the mail.

I reminded her that she told me in April that Costin had typed the note in front of her and handed it to her. Vega paused.

"I guess I did not do that," she said. Asked to clarify, she paused again, then said he did type it in front of her, but he also sent it in the mail.

She said we could still go see her doctor in the Bronx. I agreed to go, but said I also wanted to see Costin.

She agreed and promised to send a text message with the Bronx doctor's address as soon as she hung up.

The text message didn't come after she hung up, and it didn't come the day after or the day after that.

On the day we were to visit the Bronx doctor, she sent a text message saying she'd just received her divorce papers and had to cancel the blood test.

"I have to meet up wit my lawyer instead hope u understand that settlin my divorce is more important and time consuming than this article," she wrote.

The only other messages she sent in the week that followed were about preventing an article and "legal consequences." There were no more plans for doctor's visits.

O'Connell said he would fight for full custody of their daughter in the divorce. He's now consumed with preparing for a future he had tried not to think about for so long: life as a single parent.
